Solar energy reaches a surface as three things: ultraviolet, visible light, and infrared. Traditional paint typically blocks some visible light (depending on color) and very little of the other two. A ceramic heat-block coating uses engineered ceramic compounds to block all three — so the energy never enters the structure.
Super Therm® uses four ceramic compounds; Sunshield® uses a similar (consumer-tier) ceramic blend.

Heat-block coatings work on the exterior of a structure, blocking incoming radiant heat. They do not generate or contain heat that is already inside (for that, see Heat Management). They are not measured in R-value — they don’t slow conductive heat through an assembly; they prevent it from entering.
