Coatings for Hawaiʻi Island

EVERY CLIMATE IN ONE ISLAND

The Big Island Is Six Islands in One

Hawaiʻi Island spans climate zones from arid desert to tropical rainforest, often within a 30-mile drive. The right coating depends entirely on where the building sits.

Kona Side (West) — Intense Sun, Salt Air

The driest and sunniest part of Hawaiʻi. Resort and residential roofs cook from sunrise to sunset. Coastal salt corrosion is significant.

Recommendations: – Super Therm® on commercial and resort roofs (documented results in similar climates: Sony Japan 86% peak demand cut, Aramco Saudi Arabia tanks 15°C cooler) – Sunshield® on residential roofs — the fastest cooling-bill payback in Hawaiʻi – Rust Grip® on coastal metalwork – SP Interlock® + Enamo Grip® on pool decks

Hilo Side (East) — Heavy Rain & Humidity

Among the wettest cities in the United States. Mold, mildew, and persistent moisture dominate the coating problem.

Recommendations:SP Liquid Membrane® + Super Therm® for flat and low-slope roof systems – Rust Grip® + Enamo Grip® for exposed metalwork (especially older Hilo buildings) – SP Interlock® on concrete fighting persistent moisture and algae – Moist Metal Grip on water tanks and pipe (rain catchment systems benefit significantly)

Waimea / Kohala — Cattle Country, High Wind

Ranching operations with large agricultural buildings, persistent trade winds, and lower humidity than the Hilo side.

Recommendations:Super Therm® on ranch and livestock building roofs (poultry: 16.7°C / 30°F attic reduction; piggery: up to 15°C interior reduction) – Rust Grip® for steel structures (corrals, gates, equipment) – HPC® + Super Therm® for boilers and hot-water systems

Volcano / Volcanoes National Park Area — Vog & Acid Rain

The southern part of the island can receive significant volcanic emissions, including SO₂ that becomes acidic rain. Standard paint fails fast.

Recommendations:Enamo Grip 5000® topcoat — engineered for acid-rain resistance – Rust Grip® as primer underneath – Moist Metal Grip for any water-collection systems

Puna — Lava Risk, Rebuild, Solar Heat

The 2018 lava flow rebuild and the off-grid solar-heavy housing in Puna both benefit from heat-block coatings on the modest, often metal-roofed homes common to the area.

Recommendations:Sunshield® on residential metal roofs – Rust Grip® + Enamo Grip® for exposed metalwork

Inter-Island Logistics for the Big Island

The Big Island’s size means we typically scope a project as a single trip with materials shipped ahead. Free phone consultation, written quote, and a coordinated application window once we agree on scope.
