Maui’s Three Coating Stories

1. Lahaina Rebuild

The 2023 fire rebuild has placed extraordinary attention on fire-resistant and resilient construction. SPI’s coating family is unusually relevant here:

 

  • Omega Fire — ceramic fire-resistance coating engineered for direct flame to 1,200°C (2,200°F). Stays bonded under wind, water, and pressure — unlike intumescents that can be blown off.
  • Super Therm® — Class A fire rating (Flame Spread 0 / Smoke Spread 0) and the building’s primary insulation in one coat. Reduces cooling load while providing fire resistance.
  • Rust Grip® — for steel construction, replaces hot-dip galvanizing without the toxic process or schedule impact.

2. Resort & Hospitality (Wailea, Kaanapali, Kapalua)

South and West Maui resorts run massive cooling bills year-round. Super Therm® on a hotel tower roof and west-facing walls cuts that load measurably — and stays performing for 30+ years.

 

  • Super Therm® on roofs and high-exposure walls
  • Rust Grip® on lanai railings, gates, pool hardware (Hawaiʻi salt corrosion is brutal on resort metalwork)

3. Upcountry, Kula, Makawao

Different problem set — higher elevation, cooler temperatures, but intense UV and significant agricultural use (livestock, equestrian, small farms). Solar heat is still the main load through the roof in most barn and agricultural building structures.

Inter-Island Logistics

Coatings ship by the pail from a central warehouse and arrive on Maui in a few business days. For commercial projects we typically come over for a site visit and stay through a portion of the application to make sure the system goes down correctly. For residential and smaller commercial, we’ll set up a Maui-based applicator or come direct depending on scope.
